Lewis - Complete Series 1-3 - Original British Version Complete and UNCUT [DVD] [2007] Sale price $ 79.99 Actors: Rebecca Front, Kevin Whately, Laurence Fox.Run Time: 1114 minutes. Number of discs: 13 Starring: Kevin Whately, Laurence Fox, Clare Holman, Neil Pearson, Haydn Gwynne, Joanna Lumley, Art Malik, James Fox, Helen Baxendale, Simon Callow. DVD Region 1 for USA & Canada Kevin Whately is Detective Inspector Robbie Lewis, ably assisted by his young sidekick, D.S. Hathaway (Laurence Fox) in this hit detective drama full of intriguing murder mystery. Set in the idyllic surroundings of Oxford and its University campus, murder has never been so appealing. Series 1 It's taken a long time for Kevin Whately to take centre stage in a detective drama, but Lewis proves it's been time well spent. Lewis, of course, was previously the sidekick to Inspector Morse, and that raised fair suspicions that this spin-off drama was a fairly unnecessary cash-in of sorts. But those suspicions have proven unfounded, and Lewis has emerged as one of the best new programmes to hit ITV in recent years. The format's not moved on a great deal since the heights of Inspector Morse, but in this case, that's no bad thing. The episodes in this set on the whole build slowly, and build up intelligently and with diligence. Occasionally there are moments where the pace slips a little too much, but that's more than overcome by the fact that the drama on offer here is so absorbing. It's all anchored, of course, by Whately's excellent portrayal of the lead character. Eminently watchable, and clearly wearing the clothes of a character that he knows completely, it's a smashing performance, and with the aid of an excellent supporting cast, Lewis develops into a real treat. Is it better than Morse? Well, that's far too early too call. But on this basis of this debut, Lewis certainly has the potential for as enduring a legacy. --Jon Foster Series 2 After the successful first standalone outing for the character, Kevin Whately returns to the title role of Lewis again, for a second full season of investigations. And things seem, to the benefit of the viewer, just as dangerous as they always were. This series of Lewis is set five years after the death of Inspector Morse (to whom Lewis was, of course, the sidekick), and while the gap left behind by the late, great John Thaw is occasionally felt, this is still very much quality drama in its own right. Thus, this series finds the detective in his familiar Oxford stomping ground. Accompanied by Laurence Fox’s DS Hathaway, a collection of well-written, compelling mysteries are waiting to be solved. The series' investigations cover the discovery of a body in a library through to the world of underground boxing and a rape case that brings out the worst in the Oxford establishment. And there aren't any weak links here: each episode is involving, intelligent and a gripping watch. Even at its worst, Lewis is very good television drama. What’s more, Whately is terrific in the increasingly complex central role, and the scripts continue to allow him to flesh out the character. Lewis is, in many ways, a flawed man, and as he works his way through the layered and involving cases, this becomes ever-more obvious. And the programme is all the better for it. For in spite of some cynicism when it first announced that a standalone Lewis programme was being produced, there’s ample here to silence the most sceptical of naysayers. For Lewis is, simply, very strong television. --Jon Foster Series 3 What could have been an ill-advised spin-off continues to excel as Lewis arrives at its third series. Firmly stepping out of the shadows of Inspector Morse, Kevin Whately as Inspector Lewis once more is solving murders and mysteries in Oxford. And again, he's joined by Laurence Fox as DS Hathway, his partner in crime-solving. And Lewis gives the pair some interesting scenarios to get their teeth into. There are four feature-length stories in total, and things get started when a Czech barmaid is discovered, having being slashed to death. There's, as you'd expect, more to the crime than immediately meets the eye, and that convention continues in the following episode, where a student Shakespearian production abruptly ends after one of the cast is stabbed with a prop knife. We also get to meet, before the series ends, a rock star towards the end of his career, in what proves to be a terrific episode to close the series. To reveal any more significant plot points of Lewis would be to spoil half the fun. What this third series retains though is the kind of diligent, well-produced drama that its predecessor was. And in Whately, it has a lead actor who studiously inhabits his role, and ensures that the name of Inspector Lewis is another to add to the British detective hall of fame. Very strong drama, and it's just getting better. --Jon Foster Disc 1.) Lewis The Pilot Disc 2.) Whom The Gods Would Destroy Disc 3.) Old School Ties Disc 4.) Expiation Disc 5.) Upstairs, Downstairs - Collector's Edition Megaset Region 1 USA & Canada $ 124.99 Number of discs: 24 DVD's Run Time: 4144 minutes (The Complete Series plus Thomas and Sarah) (1974) Actors: John Alderton, Pauline Collins, Pam St. Clement, Graham Cull, Maria Charles. This seminal British television series is just as enjoyable now as when it first aired in the early 1970s. Richard (David Langton), Lady Marjorie (Rachel Gurney), and their son James (Simon Williams) comprise the aristocratic Bellamy family that reside upstairs while their loyal servants--including butler Hudson (Gordon Jackson), cook Mrs. Bridges (Angela Baddeley), and housemaid Rose (Jean Marsh)--maintain the household from downstairs. The series follows the upper-class family's troubles as times change and the ongoing lives of their resilient staff.
Upstairs Downstairs: The Complete Series contains 68 episodes on 20 DVDs, as well as the series retrospective Upstairs Downstairs Remembered: the 25th Anniversary Special. Initially set in 1904, the first season comprises 13 episodes, 5 of which are 5 black-and-white episodes not aired during the first season of the original U.S. broadcast. The second season's 13 episodes cover various relationship problems and an appearance of King Edward VII. The third season's 13 episodes follow the London household through the prewar years (1912-1914). Outstanding cast performances and the dramatic backdrop of the Great War give the fourth season, set in 1914 to 1918, its reputation as the best of the five. Due to limited filming budgets, the war is largely seen through home-front activities. The 16 episodes of the fifth and final season cover the swinging '20s to the stock market crash (1919-30). The episodes of the fifth season are more self-contained than other seasons' and every bit as entertaining. The series ends with Rose locking up the empty house, closing the door on one of TV's most popular and acclaimed shows. Whether you first met the Bellamys and their delightfully enjoyable downstairs entourage in the 1970s or are just getting to know them now, the superb acting and compelling character development will always be the real reason to watch Upstairs Downstairs. --
Also included in the Collector's Edition Megaset is the spinoff series Thomas and Sarah, in which two of Upstairs Downstairs' most colorful characters were given a series of their own: Thomas the chauffer (John Alderton, Calendar Girls) and Sarah the parlor maid (Pauline Collins, Shirley Valentine). The series charted the social and financial escapades of this dubious pair, who lived together without getting married and were as comfortable with con artistry as lawful employment. The tone and quality of these 13 episodes varies from social commentary to light adventure, but at its best Thomas and Sarah could match its illustrious forebear. The first episode starts things off on a smart, satirical note: Thomas disturbs Sarah's carefully fabricated new identity when, to woo her back into his arms, he concocts a new persona of his own. But it's a handful of later episodes that are truly remarkable. In one, Sarah tells Thomas that she's pregnant to forestall his dream of emigrating to America. When he learns that she's lied to him, he enacts a vicious revenge; Alderton's performance is both convincing and frightening. In another, success in the stock market leads Thomas and Sarah to hire servants of their own--with decidedly uncomfortable results (Nigel Hawthorne, The Madness of King George, appears as a stern and rigid butler). The exploration of class is clever, subtle, and insightful. A second season was never produced due to a strike, but this single season remains a fascinating portrait of the Edwardian era, sparkling with superb acting and writing. Collins and Alderton create two engaging, contradictory, and utterly vivid characters, worthy of your time.

Midsomer Murders, Set 10 (1998) $ 59.99 Format: Box set, Color, DVD-Video, Widescreen, NTSC. Number of discs: 4 Gruesome doings in bucolic villages make Midsomer Murders an addictive British detective series. Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby (John Nettles), a staunch, determined policeman with a nose for sniffing out motives and crucial mistakes, investigates murders in this bizarrely homicidal rural district, accompanied by the younger, not as insightful, but still dutiful Sergeant Scott (John Hopkins). Set 10 features three superb episodes and one disappointing one (which, confusingly enough, are from the show's eighth series on the BBC). Each episode is a 90-100 minute movie, cunningly structured so the solution always seems just out of reach yet tantalizingly close. The characters are well-developed and rarely feel like mere puppets designed to distract viewers from an inevitable solution; the psychological richness of the show is crucial to its appeal. In Second Sight, a young lad may have died from electric shocks delivered during tests of his extrasensory powers. As Barnaby struggles to separate science from superstition, he comes across an ominous caged chair, a psychic baby, and a man who fears he's foreseen his own death. Hidden Depths features some truly spectacular revenge killings, including one using a catapult and many bottles of wine; the episode is practically a genteel (and less pretentious) version of Saw or Seven. Sauce for the Goose turns the prosaic setting of a relish factory into a swirling crucible of madness, secrets, lost love, and boiled flesh. Only Midsomer Rhapsody, in which the possibly forged manuscript of a dead composer results in a variety of head traumas, founders in melodramatic backstory. But even when the show isn't at its sharpest, Nettles drives each episode forward with his charismatic blend of compassion and doggedness. Viewers usually resistant to crime-show formulas may find Midsomer Murders more compelling than most, while any fan of mysteries will be hooked in seconds.
